Europe Needs 745,000 Truck Drivers. e-DRIVE Is Here to Help.
The European logistics sector is in trouble. Over 230,000 truck driver positions remain unfilled today, with that number expected to climb to 745,000 in the coming years. More than half of European trucking companies say the shortage is holding them back, and with one-third of current drivers aged over 55, the clock is ticking. The problem isn’t just about getting people behind the wheel. It’s about preparing them for a profession that is evolving fast — from digital tachographs and smart fleet management to green logistics and AI-powered route optimisation. Traditional training programmes haven’t kept up.
That’s why we’re launching e-DRIVE — Enhancing Development, Readiness, Innovation, and Vocational Education for Logistics Drivers. Co-funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ Programme, e-DRIVE is a 24-month cooperation partnership that will develop 8 digital micro-courses covering the skills that today’s logistics drivers actually need. Each micro-course will award a recognised micro-credential — a short, stackable qualification that goes far beyond a driving licence. Topics range from international shipping and client service to truck maintenance, green logistics, entrepreneurship, and artificial intelligence in transport. The courses will be delivered through a dedicated e-learning platform, enriched with a digital driving simulator developed by our technology partner Cerca Trova. All materials will be published as Open Educational Resources, free for any VET institution in Europe to adopt.
e-DRIVE brings together six partners from five countries: Fundación Dolores Sopeña (Spain, Coordinator), INCOMA (Spain), 4 EPAL Kavalas (Greece), WAM Foundation (Netherlands), Cerca Trova (Bulgaria), and APRC (Lithuania).
Over the next 24 months, we’ll develop the courses, pilot them with 120 VET students, and build a transnational career office network connecting schools directly with logistics employers.
Follow our journey — this is just the beginning.
